Main Pathways to Portuguese Citizenship
The most common routes to obtaining Portuguese nationality include:
- Birthright: If you were born in Portugal to foreign parents who have resided legally in the country for at least one year, you may be eligible for citizenship.
- Descent: Having Portuguese parents or grandparents can qualify you for nationality through jus sanguinis (right of blood). This applies even if you were born outside Portugal.
- Marriage: Foreign nationals married to Portuguese citizens for at least three years can apply for citizenship, regardless of residency in Portugal.
- Naturalization: After five years of legal residence in Portugal, foreign nationals can apply for citizenship. This period may be reduced in certain circumstances, such as for citizens from Portuguese-speaking countries.
- Investment: The Golden Visa program allows investors to obtain residency and, after five years, apply for citizenship while maintaining minimal physical presence requirements.
